Once in a while, a public domain gem can be found in the animation bargain bins. This Digiview release emerges as one of the better Felix the Cat compilations from the Pat Sullivan-Otto Messmer period. With the glorious exception of "Woos Whoopee" (1928), the cartoons on this hour-long DVD feature the sloppy post-synchronized soundtracks distributed by Copley Pictures in 1929-30. Felix manages to rise above the turgid audio in classic shorts such as "Skulls and Sculls," "Arabiantics" and "Futuritzy." Unfortunately, the silent-era feline failed to make the talkie transition due to producer Sullivan's poor handling of sound.
