(More customer reviews)This collection of classic cartoons has a nice mix of characters and styles. "Daffy the Commando," "The Sunshine Makers," and "The Big Bad Wolf" are among my all-time favorites. Total running time is 65 minutes. Episode list:
"Daffy the Commando," 1943, directed by Isadore "Friz" Freleng, animated by Ken Champin, with music by Carl Stalling for the Schlesinger Studios. Fantastic and funny anti-Nazi piece, featuring Von Vulture as the bad guy, with Daffy Duck parachuting into enemy territory. Includes a very naked wall poster! 5*
"The Hunting Season," 1935, directed by Burt Gillett and Tom Palmer for the Van Beuren Studios. Molly Moo-Cow rescues her duck friends from a hunter. This one has no dialogue, but lots of quacks and moos. 4*
"The Sunshine Makers," 1935, directed by Ted Eshbaugh for the Van Beuren Studios. Happy gnomes are happy because they have discovered how to bottle sunshine. They pelt a neighboring town of gloomy gnomes with the bottles, and then everyone is happy. Fantastic animation in this gem, and though the color is quite degraded, it is still terrific. 5*
"A Case of the Missing Hare," 1942, directed by Chuck Jones, animated by Ken Harris, with music by Carl Stalling for the Schlesinger Studios. Ala Baham the Magician keeps putting posters of his show over the entrance to Bugs Bunny's home. Bugs declares war! 4*
"A Mutt in a Rut," 1949, directed by Isadore Sparber, animated by Dave Tendlar and Tom Golden, music by Winston Sharples, for Famous Studios. This is the 2nd of 2 cartoons featuring Dogface. Dogface has to adjust to a kitten who is adopted into his home, and has a scary out-of-body experience that teaches him a lesson in acceptance. St. Bernard's judgement is priceless! 4*
"Pigs in Polka," 1943, directed by Isadore "Friz" Freleng, with music by Carl Stalling for the Schlesinger Studios. Adorable telling of the wolf and 3 pigs story. Was Oscar nominated for Best Short Subject. Cleverly synchronizes movements to Brahms' "Hungarian Dances" theme. 5*
"Prest-O-Change-O," 1939, directed by Chuck Jones, animated by Ken Harris, music by Carl Stalling for the Schlesinger Studios. Features 2 dogs and Sham-Fu the Magician, a rabbit who is a little like Bugs Bunny. This one is a "silent" cartoon, and a little lame. 3*
"Goal Rush," 1946, directed by Isadore Sparber, animated by Dave Tendlar and George Germanetti, music by Winston Sharples for Famous Studios. The Canines and the Alley Cats play at the Milk Bowl, and there's a cute "follow the bouncing ball" sing-along for the Navy, Army and Notre Dame songs. Color degraded to mostly an orange and brown mix. 4*
"The Big Bad Wolf," (AKA "Little Boy Blue"), 1936, created by Ub Iwerks, with a nifty jazzy score by Carl Stalling. This is from Iwerks after he left Disney and the Mickey Mouse they both created, and went on his own backed by Pat Powers. Lots of dancing animals with a very bad wolf, who is after the lambs. Marvelous, despite color deterioration to pink/green shades. 5*
"Robin Hood," 1960, narrated by John Rust. Nice clean watercolor style for this "biography" of Robin Hood. 3*
