(More customer reviews)I just got this cartoon for Pesakh and I'm a little disappointed. It has not went through the ultimate test--my grandson.
The animation is not your typical cartoon in its technique. Not a lot of movement but much like a slightly moving animated comic strip. Example, the mouths don't move while characters speak, and most movement is moving objects in and out of focus from foreground to background, etc. But it's still okay. The voice talent is fine if not good.
My disappointment is mostly personal due to the story actually given. It is Tanakh based, but also incorporates a lot of midrash type material which takes away from the story. Example, my grandson's mother is Christian and so he is exposed to their holidays with their myths and miracles which he already recognizes as silliness and easy to not take them seriously. Because of a similar approach by midrash incorporated you will see Paroh's daughter (Batya!) a secret monotheist reaches out over the water for Mosheh hers arm growing longer and longer to reach him. He knows all along he is Hebrew (in this DVD that equals Jewish and called Jew). Mosheh is so great that his countenance glows and blinds people. His birth almost competes (or vice versa) with Jesus nativity stuff. And for me it takes away and comes close to putting the story too close to Christian type fables. I want him to see the difference. The straight Miqra beats the Midrash approach for me. But I realize the DVD would appeal to more traditional orthodox Jewish families.
Something I like very much is that the characters are allowed to keep their Hebrew names and so we have no anglicized "church" names. It's Mosheh not Moses, Aharon rather than Aaron. Mom is Yokheved instead of Jocheved or whatever, and so on. Even "Pharoah" is Par'oh. The dialogue is pretty good and modern rather than "biblical" to which more kids might relate; and there are many situations expressed in a modern way.
I suppose the license toward scripture to midrash could be explained as cartoon. It would be, if your child is capable, a good opportunity to explain the midrash approach to Bible. So I hope the grandson likes it and that it at least makes a good opportunity to talk about the meaning of Pesakh for his people. And it does teach! He's hard to please. Have no idea where he gets it.
I gave an extra star because of the great dearth of movies and cartoons for our kids and adults and this cartoon adds to our resources in a positive way being 100% Jewish.
